It’s botanical name is Dianthus caryophyllus, but through out the world this ruffled little bloom is commonly known as the carnation. One of the world’s oldest cultivated flowers, the carnation has suffered an identity crisis in recent times, being thought of as a cheap filler flower and dated choice of bloom and as such are rarely considered worthy for any form of decoration let alone as wedding flowers. The first time I saw the carnation re-invented was many years ago on the pages of a Martha Stewart magazine, after all no one can make something old new again quite like Martha can, and I was inspired by the lovely impact they created when used en masse. I was amazed at how quickly my opinion of the carnation changed from ‘daggy’ to I can’t wait to start experimenting with them and I have never looked at them with raised eyebrows since. Given they are readily available year round, inexpensive, come in a range of pretty colours and are very hardy, isn’t it about time we reconsidered the value of this sweet little bloom?

Ok, it’s official, my latest obsession is the Petit Four…These delicate, sweet, bite-sized morsels of loveliness have my mouth watering and my creative juices flowing with visions of baking, decorating and impressing friends and family at future gatherings and parties… They would make for a tasty and visually stunning alternative to dessert for a wedding, presented on platters, stands and trays, displayed as a buffet or served as floating desserts, dare I say that petits fours may be the new cupcake?

I just adore these beautiful dresses from Sydney based boutique Rose and Ruby; the romantic style, the quality fabrics, the stunning lace detail and delicious colour palette… I am visualising a gorgeous wedding theme as I write this, perhaps a Rose and Ruby inspiration board? Mmm, coming soon…

I just love these lolly bags by Poppies for Grace - they would make lovely bonbonniere tied with pretty ribbon or dressed up with vintage buttons, clips, pegs or brads. They also have gorgeous wedding invites and other stationery goodies printed with vegetable based inks on 100% re-cycled stock…

If you are looking for something different for your table centrepieces then take a look at Sisko Chocolate. Founder, Christina Tantsis creates beautiful custom designed chocolate sculptures and divine handcrafted chocolate flowers which would make for unusual and delicious table centrepieces. At the end of the evening your guests could break off the petals and enjoy the delicious chocolate which would have them talking about it long after your wedding day is over. They also make mini flowers which would make gorgeous little favours for your guests to take home.
